Brief History of the Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus was chartered on March 29, 1882 in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut by Father Michael J. McGivney. The purpose of the organization was to provide security for the widows and orphans of young Catholic men who suffered an untimely death. It has grown to over fourteen thousand councils with over 1.8 million members in many countries around the world.

The local council, Fr. Pierre E. Boivin Council #5041, was chartered in October, 1960, fell dormant in the ‘70’s and was reorganized in August, 1980 by Fr. Donald J. Ravey.  Membership has been fairly constant at approximately one hundred members. The current Grand Knight is David W. Anderson of Morrisville and the Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Assembly is Roland Lajoie of Hyde Park.  Fr. Francis Privé serves as our Chaplain.  Paul Provost of Hyde Park is Membership Director. Members are mainly from Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish and Blessed Sacrament in Stowe. The council holds business meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at the Msgr. Crosby Center.

The Knights practice the principles charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. They work in the fields of church, family, council, youth and community. Annual events include a corned beef and cabbage dinner on St. Patrick’s Day, a silent auction and dinner in late January, Light Up for Christ and a family gathering at Christmas time. An annual Tootsie Roll Drive raises funds for people with intellectual disabilities. Picnics are held in the Whitcomb Park built by the Knights on church property. Recent projects involved installing cedar siding and trim on an addition at the Bishop Marshall School and building a pavilion at the Mt. Norris Boy Scout Camp in Eden in memory of Past Grand Knight Edwin R. Taylor.

Information about the Knights is available online at www.Kofc.org or any local member.
